When you have a dental problem, you go to the dentist and you make a treatment plan together. This is done so your dentist can then prioritize which treatments to do first, and which ones to save for later. Sometimes, however, you may change your mind in the middle. What is a Dental Implant?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dental Implants are permanent tooth replacements that are surgically placed in your jawbone. The implant itself is made of three different parts, each with its own job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Post \u2013<\/strong> This is the part that is placed into your jawbone. It\u2019s a small threaded post made of titanium that serves as the new \u201croot\u201d of your tooth. Over time, the post will fuse with your jaw to make it sturdy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Abutment \u2013<\/strong> This is a connective piece that is placed over the post to give your crown a place to attach to and provide space for your crown to fit between your other teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Crown \u2013<\/strong> A dental crown is a prosthetic tooth made from a hard ceramic material. It attaches to the abutment to complete the replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can You Replace Existing Treatments?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes, you can! Even if you\u2019ve already had another treatment such as a dental bridge completed to replace a missing tooth, you can still opt for a dental implant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, if you wanted to replace an existing dental bridge, you could have a dental implant replace the missing tooth and then have the bridge placed over the implant. This not only replaces the tooth but also stops the loss of bone density in your jaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Replacing existing work doesn\u2019t mean you have to \u201cstart over.\u201d In fact, it ensures that the work that has already been done continues to serve the purpose of your treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are there any Contraindications?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants. While most patients should have no problem, there are some contraindications (factors that prevent treatment).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have existing disorders or diseases such as diabetes or gum disease that compromise your immune system, you may not be able to receive the treatment. Dental implants require surgery, and anything that might cause infection is taken into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re trying to replace your dentures with dental implants due to missing teeth, you may not have enough bone mass to support an implant. Your dentist can usually solve this issue using a bone graft, but this isn\u2019t always the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want the sturdiest restoration possible, you can\u2019t go wrong with dental implants. If you\u2019re thinking of replacing some of your own treatments with implants, talk to your dentist. If you already have an ongoing treatment plan, they can modify it to fit your needs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
